anniversary hiking

We had our nine year kissiversary on the 20th, so we celebrated by hiking at the Wissahickon River Gorge in Philly this weekend. The sky was cloudy and drizzly and the trail was super muddy, but we had a great time.

Here's an "oh duh" statement for you: Exercising most days makes hiking SO much easier. It's incredible. I'm definitely getting in better shape.

All together we hiked about 3 miles. We often go on walks longer than that, so I wasn't anticipating being this sore today. Geez.

Here's a knitting update:

1. Ben's grandmother, who we visited in FL over the holidays, has an amazing knitted, patchwork-style afghan. She said that her mother had made it and it's still in awesome shape. Ben decided he wanted one just like it. The good news is that it's knitting up rather quickly. The bad? It's entirely in garter stitch. It's probably the most boring thing I've ever knitted. I guess it makes knitting while watching TV easier.

The plan is to make 80 squares (30 stitches wide) in 6 different colors. Then I'm crocheting the squares together with black yarn. I'll probably do a cute, ruffly border depending on how it turns out.

After about 3 weeks, I have 12 squares done, including the complete first row of 8 squares. Here's the first row, in all its glory.

2. Last night I started knitting a gauge swatch for the Cut Your Teeth socks from Knitty. I'm terrified of sock knitting and I can't remember the last time I used double-pointeds. The yarn is a pretty blue wool. I hope I don't ruin it. These will be for Ben so I can botch them and not feel as bad.

here we go

In an effort to make myself accountable to my NYs resolutions, I thought I'd track some things on a blog. I'd really like to see myself stick with this, so here it goes.

Resolutions
  1. Knit and/or crochet five days a week - I'd like to set a project goal, but I'm not sure what I'll feel like making this year. I just want to finish projects I begin. I've been knitting on and off for almost a decade and I've probably only finished a dozen things. I have a blanket and a pair of socks in the works right now.
  2. Get any sort of exercise every single day.
  3. Stretch lots.
  4. Keep better contact with family.
  5. Build up my music collection.
  6. Read 10 novels - I know that sounds puny, but it's hard to find the time.
  7. Learn a programming language.
  8. Study Spanish.
How does that sound? Considering January is almost over and I've been awesome about these so far, I'm feeling optimistic.
